Bug Themed Toddler Activity

We recently had a full-on bug day, and it was such a hit with my kids (ages 2, 3, and 5). I love when I can set up a few simple activities and each of them finds something they enjoy. Win-win for them and me.

Bugs Themed Toddler Activities

Books & Bug Cutouts

We started by reading a few bug themed books and exploring bug cutouts from our HOLA AMIGO BOX. This helped set the tone and got the kids excited about the theme. My 5-year-old loved identifying the bugs and even practiced saying their names in both English and Spanish!

Easy 4-Piece Bug Puzzles

These 4 Piece Bug Puzzles were the perfect challenge for my 2- and 3-year-old. My youngest was so proud of himself every time he completed one, and my 3-year-old (almost 4) kept going back to them. It was a great way to build focus and confidence.

Bug-Themed Floor Puzzle

For my 5-year-old, I brought out a larger Bug Themed Floor Puzzle with all kinds of bugs. It kept him busy while I worked with the younger two, and he loved the independence. He even matched some of the puzzle bugs with the ones in the books, a proud mom moment!

Sensory Play: Rice & Dirt

I set up a bin with dry rice and another with pretend dirt for some bug sensory play. My 2-year-old was all in, scooping, pouring, and pretending the bugs were hiding. It was messy, but in the best way. This kept her engaged the longest out of everything.

Coloring & Bug Matching

All three kids enjoyed coloring bug chart, but my 3-year-old especially loved it. He also matched the bug cutouts while naming them in English, which made it both fun and educational.

What I Loved Most

These activities were low-prep, screen-free, and covered everything from fine motor skills to language development — all while keeping my little ones happy and busy. That’s a major win in my book.

Bug Play Tip:

If your kids love bugs too, keep a few puzzles, cutouts, and sensory bin items on hand. You can pull together a themed play session in minutes, and it’s easy to tailor it to each child’s age and interests.
